Which to Choose: OpenCart 3.0.4.1 or OpenCart 4.1.0.3?

A question we regularly get from clients and colleagues: is it time to switch to OpenCart 4, or is it better to stay on the proven "three"? New versions attract with their functionality, but also cause some caution due to the "rawness" of releases. Let's look at the situation from the perspective of module and extension developers.

OpenCart 3.0.4.1 — reliable and time-tested

Version 3.0.4.1 is not a revolution but rather a cosmetic update to the previous 3.0.4.0. There are no changes to the database structure, so the update happens by simply replacing files — no extra hassle required.

The biggest advantage of this version is stability. It works with most popular modules and templates, doesn't require hunting for compatible extensions, and doesn't force you to read through the changelog with a magnifying glass. That's exactly why many developers continue to recommend it as the main choice for live production sites.

OpenCart 4.1.0.3 — ambitious but not yet stable

The 4.x branch is intended to modernize the platform. Many internal mechanisms have been updated here: SQL queries have become lighter, support for new PHP versions has been added, CKEditor has been improved, and a built-in blog module has appeared. They might seem like minor things, but they show the direction in which OpenCart as a CMS is moving.

However, along with new capabilities come new problems. Some users have already encountered bugs during upgrades. Others — incompatibility with their favorite modules. And the admin interface has become somewhat "different," which also requires adaptation.

What do we recommend choosing?

If you plan to launch a store in the near future, don't want to take risks, and value predictability — OpenCart 3.0.4.1 remains the golden middle. It is already well battle-tested. The community supports it, it's compatible with thousands of templates and extensions, and you can realistically build an online store with it in a few days.

On the other hand, if you are a developer, a technically confident user, or simply not afraid of experimenting — it's worth taking a closer look at OpenCart 4.1.0.3. But we advise testing it separately, on a site copy, rather than in a live project.

So, OpenCart 3 is a proven classic, while OpenCart 4 is an experiment that may eventually become the new standard, but not today. If you are not ready for surprises — choose stability.
